The University of Malaya academic staff is responsible for teaching and research. More than 2,000 academic staff teaches approximately 300 courses each year.

Master of Anaesthesiology (MAnaes)

In June 1987 the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Malaya introduced the Master of Anaesthesiology degree course. This course has been fully supported by the Ministry of Health through scholarships or paid leave granted to applicants for the whole duration of each course. This support has enabled many doctors in Ministry of Health hospitals to acquire formal specialist training in anaesthesiology, with a resultant increase in the number of practicing anaesthesiologists in the country. Apart from training Ministry of Health applicants we also take local and overseas applicants as private candidates.

The four year course, leading to the degree of Master of Anaesthesiology, provides:

  • Specialist training in anaesthesia, pain medicine, resuscitation and intensive care,
  • Subspecialty training in anaesthesiology,
  • Exposure to research methodology.

The aim of the degree programme is to enable the anaesthesiologist to practice independently in anaesthesia in a Malaysian hospital as well as to inculcate a lifelong commitment to excellence and learning.


1. Six months after completing a four-year anaesthesiology training programme and receiving a degree in Masters of Anaesthesiology (University of Malaya), the physician is eligible to be registered as an Anaesthesiologist in the National Specialist Register in Malaysia.

2. Department of Anaesthesiology, University of Malaya is one of the accredited training institutions for the Anaesthesiology Training Programme by the Malaysian Conjoint Examination Board for Postgraduate Medicine and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).

3. Upon completion of all training requirements, the anaesthesiology graduate is then entitled to become a Member of Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists.

The degree is recognised as the highest professional degree in anaesthesiology.
Course Structure

The programme of study comprises three stages as follows:

(1) Stage I in the first year of study encompassing clinical training in basic skills in anaesthesia and resuscitation for patient management

(2) Stage II comprising training in the second and third year of study in:

(a) clinical anaesthesiology and in non-anaesthesiology postings undertaken in rotation such as general medicine, radiology, emergency medicine, or any other posting as may be approved by the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study; and

(b) Research methodology, including the conduct of a research project in any field of anaesthesia, intensive care or pain management.

(3) Stage III comprising clinical training in the fourth year in specialised fields of anaesthesiology or intensive care or of anaesthesiology and intensive care.

(4) A candidate is required to maintain a log book throughout his period of study to document tasks undertaken.

Language Requirement

Foreign candidates who are their first degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction must have at least:

(1) A band 6 for IELTS;or

(2) A score of 550 paper based total or a score of 213 for computer-based total for TOEFL.

Without the language requirement above, the candidate must attend and pass the English Language Proficiency Programme (ELP) conducted by University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCed) at the level stipulated by the University.

Entry Requirement

(1) Entry qualifications

(a) The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and

(b) At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.

(2) Other requirements

(a) Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and

(b) Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
