The University of Malaya academic staff is responsible for teaching and research. More than 2,000 academic staff teaches approximately 300 courses each year.

Master of Internal Medicine (MlntMed)

Doctors of internal medicine are medical specialists who have had special study and training focused on the detection, prevention, clinical assessment and treatment of adult diseases. Candidates for this program will be exposed to all aspects of this from most all specialties, learn appropriate communication skills and multidisciplinary team-based learning which incorporate wholistic management of patients. Doctors of internal medicine are also trained to provide cross specialty consultations on the medical management of patients from other specialties.

Doctors of internal medicine can also choose to sub-specialize in one of a number of internal medicine specialties- for example Cardiology.Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology etc..

  • Training is well rounded and allows the candidate to practice in a team model of care which incorporates all specialties of general medicine and main sub-specialities including those not available at other universities eg. Geriatric Medicine.
  • All candidates will have practice skills in inpatient, outpatient as well as day care experience in some specialties.
  • Contact with experienced academics and specialists from all specialties through teaching, CME, conferences, bedside and tutorial based clinical teachings provide complete internal medicine training experience.
  • Research and educational training to become Consultants who practice evidence based medicine and capable of applying their knowledge to clinical practice.

Course Structure

(1) The programme of study comprises three stages as follows:

(a) Stage I in the first year comprising:

(i) the study of basic sciences relevant to the practice of internal medicine; and
(ii) clinical clerkship under supervision with emphasis on emergency medicine.

(b) Stage II in the second and third year comprising:

(i) rotational postings of three months duration each in the following eight disciplines of clinical medicine:

  • Cardiology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Gastroenterology and Hepatology
  • Haematology and Oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Rheumatology and Infectious Diseases and Dermatology


(ii) a research project

(c) Stage III in the fourth year comprising posting in an approved sub-speciality or in general medicine in the Faculty or a recognised centre outside the Faculty

(2) No candidate shall be permitted to proceed to Stage II of the programme of study unless he has passed the Part I Examination.

(3) No candidate shall be permitted to proceed to Stage III of the programme of study unless he has passed the Part II Examination.

Language Requirement

Foreign candidates who are their first degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction must have at least:

(1) A band 6 for IELTS; or

(2) A score of 550 paper based total or a score of 213 for computer-based total for TOEFL.

Without the language requirement above, the candidate must attend and pass the English Language Proficiency Programme (ELP) conducted by University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCed) at the level stipulated by the University.

Entry Requirement

(1) Entry qualifications

(a) The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and

(b) At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.

(2) Other requirements

(a) Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and

(b) Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
