The University of Malaya academic staff is responsible for teaching and research. More than 2,000 academic staff teaches approximately 300 courses each year.

Master of Paediatric Surgery (MPaedSurg)

In June 2005, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Malaya introduced the Master of PAEDIATRIC SURGERY degree course. This course was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and has been fully supported by the Ministry of Health through scholarships or paid leave granted to applicants for the whole duration of each course. This support has enabled many doctors in Ministry of Health hospitals to acquire formal specialist training in Paediatric Surgery, with a resultant increase in the number of practicing Paediatric Surgeons in the country. This program has started to address the Acute shortage of trained Paediatric Surgeons in the country and is reducing the morbidity and mortality of neonates, infants and children in the country. This program was further approved by the Malaysian Qualification Agency in 2012.

The four year course, leading to the degree of Master of Paediatric Surgery provides:

  • Phase I of the program provides the candidates, a strong Foundation in the fundamentals, namely Applied Basic sciences relevant to Children’s surgery, which enables the candidates to learn the Pre, Intra and postoperative care and Metabolic care of neonates, infants and children.
  • Provides Specialist training in General Paediatric Surgery and Specialist Paediatric Surgery. Resuscitation and intensive care of Neonates, infants and children and Pain management in children,
  • Subspecialty training in Paediatric Surgery
  • Exposes the candidates to research methodology.

The aim of this degree programme is to enable the candidates to practice independently in Paediatric surgery in a Malaysian hospital after a period of supervised training in Paediatric surgery and its subspecialties. It enables the candidates, with adequate Knowledge, Technical expertise, Social skills and responsibility (Health Advocacy), Values (Ethical issues), Attitudes and Professionalism needed to practice Paediatric Surgery. They learn problem solving skills and scientific skills and will be able to develop clinical decision making skills and mange their patients with utmost care and commitment. They learn, Information management and Life long learning skills, which gives them Continuous Professional development opportunities and keeps them up to date with recent developments, and makes them good learners and Teachers. They learn to utilize available resources, in patient care effectively and in a cost-effective manner and become successful team players.

1. To the Nation: There is acute shortage of manpower in Children’s Surgery and Its subspecialties. We need 150 to 180 Paediatric Surgeons in the country. At present 5 states don’t have paediatric surgeons and Others have one consultant paediatric surgeon, except Kuala Lumpur. Subspecialties in paediatric surgery are not available as in developed countries and some developing countries. This will be addressed in stages.

2. To the Qualified paediatric surgeon, opportunities to specialize in subspecialties are available and candidates are sent overseas, to train in these areas.

Course Structure

The programme of study comprises of two stages as follows:

(1) Stage I in the first year of study comprising Applied Basic Sciences and General Principles of Surgery and/or subspecialties in Surgery.

(2) Stage II in the second, third and fourth years of study comprising:

(a) Six (6) months in Paediatric Medicine, with rotation postings in Neonatology, Paediatric Intensive Care and Paediatric Oncology. This part of the programme should be completed in the second year of the programme.

(b) Subsequent 2½ years (30 months): Training in Applied Basic Sciences relevant to Paediatric Surgery, including Embryology, Principles and Practice of Paediatric Surgery, and clinical problems in Paediatric Surgery with rotation postings in the University or other accredited Paediatric Surgery Unit. The last six months should be spent in the University.

(c) Research project report or case book:

At the beginning of Stage II, a candidate should either

(i) undertake a research project and submit a research report not later than three months before the Final Examination; or

(ii) submit a case book of 12 interesting cases in detail with review of the literature not later than three months before the Final Examination. They should publish a minimum of three papers in ISI/Scopus journals.

Language Requirement

Foreign candidates whose first degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction must have at least:

(1) A band 6 for IELTS; or

(2) A score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer-based) for TOEFL.

Without the language requirement above, the candidate must attend and pass the English Language Proficiency Programme (ELP) conducted by the University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCed) at the level stipulated by the University.

Entry Requirement

(1) Entry qualifications

(a) The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and

(b) At least two years of post-full registration clinical experience in General Surgery and its subspecialties, (at least 12 to 18 months in general surgery is preferable), approved by the Senate.

(2) Other requirements

(a) Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and

(b) Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
