In recent times, the need for greener and cleaner technologies has increased phenomenally. Conventional technologies with high carbon footprints are being replaced with more environmental friendly alternatives. Ionic liquids are one such alternative being used to replace volatile organic solvents which contribute to high levels of pollution. In order to explore and understand ionic liquids, University of Malaya Centre for Ionic Liquids (UMCiL) was established in September 2007. UMCiL is co-founded by the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Chemistry, University of Malaya.
Discovering the potential of ionic liquids in various scientific platforms.
To advance the theoretical and practical understanding of ionic liquids and its application.
To be a preeminent centre in the research and innovation of ionic liquids.
- Create a conducive environment for research activities and collaboration between researchers of various fields in the area of ionic liquids, synthesis and applications.
- Set-up a platform for collaborative inter and multi-disciplinary research involved in the area of green processes.
- Provide a centre for training and development of staff for the university and the nation in the field of green chemistry and sustainable technology.
