BOOK DISTRIBUTION CEREMONY UNDER THE ‘BOOKS FOR ASIA’ PROGRAMME AND INPUMA’S AIDILFITRI GATHERING
On Friday, 14 July 2017, the International Institute of Public Policy and Management (INPUMA), University of Malaya, in collaboration with The Asia Foundation and Johor Corporation organised the Book Distribution Ceremony under the ‘Books for Asia’ Programme. The event was held at the Auditorium of Research Management and Innovation Complex, University of Malaya. Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, delivered the opening speech and presented the books to the school representatives.
‘Books for Asia’ is an outreach programme which emphasises on the use of the English language through reading and learning at all ages and levels of learning. This programme is in line with the aspiration of Malaysians from all walks of life in improving reading skills in the English language. Proficiency in English has become increasingly important in enhancing society’s capability in the context of a competitive edge in the global economy.
The event was also attended by Yang Berbahagia Profesor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Dr Khadijah Md Khalid, the Executive Director of INPUMA, Mr Herizal Hazri, Country Representative of The Asia Foundation, and Tuan Haji Jamaludin Md Ali, the Senior Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility Division, Johor Corporation.
In 2014, INPUMA, the University of Malaya, was appointed as the custodian of the ‘Books for Asia’ programme in Peninsular Malaysia. Since the implementation of the programme involved operational/administrative costs, the Johor Corporation (JCorp), has kindly agreed to be one of the key partners in the Books for Asia Programme. The JCorp, a state business entity, is also actively involved in a variety of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes, including the field of education and entrepreneurship.
Since 2014, INPUMA, with Johor Corporation and The Asia Foundation have organised a series of book distribution ceremonies in other parts of Peninsular Malaysia.
A total of 245 schools were invited to the event on 14 July 2017. All representatives of schools who attended the event received the books donated by various American publishers under the ‘Books for Asia’ programme. About 15,000 books were distributed to the representatives of schools on that day.
In conjunction with the event, INPUMA also organised a Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering. The event was held in order to strengthen INPUMA’s relationship with its working partners, namely, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MARA, embassy representatives, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and others. Guests from different government departments and agencies, ministries, and representatives from various embassies also attended the Hari Raya Aidilfitri event.
