In the month of October, the Breast Cancer Resource Centre, University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) kicks off the “Show You Care, Be Aware” Breast Cancer Campaign with a line-up of activities in conjunction with the Breast Cancer Awareness month. Among the activities are the Breast Cancer Survivor Art Exhibition, the 4th UMMC Breast Cancer Public Forum and the Breast Cancer Awareness and Information Booth in selected faculties.
The objectives of the campus-wide campaign is to spread the message of hope to the public in understanding the survivability of breast cancer and to educate the public on its early detection. The campaign is also in collaboration with the University of Malaya (UM), Community and Sustainability Centre (UMCares), Staff Training & Development Division (STanD), Institutional Advancement Centre (IAC), UMMC Nursing School, UM Medical Society (MEDSOC) and Worldwide Breast Cancer.
At the opening ceremony of the campaign on 8 October 2017, Datuk Professor Dr Awg Bulgiba Awg Mahmud, Acting Vice Chancellor of UM in his opening remark said that, “The survival of breast cancer patients in Malaysia remain poor because of late presentation and advanced stage disease. Every effort must be made to educate our community of signs and symptoms of breast cancer. Collaboration with Worldwide Breast Cancer, a charitable organization on translating the Know Your Lemons materials will provide easier understanding of breast cancer signs and symptoms using visual arts”.
One of the main highlights of the campaign is the Breast Cancer Survivor Art Exhibition that features a selection of art pieces shared by a group of talented and noble breast cancer survivors at the UM Art Gallery in hopes of raising funds for Tabung Kanser Payudara for patients in need to fund their treatments.
