There are two semesters a year. Semester 1 of the academic year commences in early September while Semester 2 commences in early February. All academic programmes are offered in the Semester 1 but only selected number of academic programmes are offered in the Semester 2. You may check for the advertisement in IGS website for the programmes offered and the deadlines to apply. You can apply anytime throughout the year for research programmes except for those with pre-requisite courses.
The length of time required for the completion of a programme depends on the mode and type of programme, and on the progress of the individual candidate. In general, the minimum, maximum and average durations are as follows:

Application details are advertised in the local newspapers and newpaper online portals in January for September intake and in July for February next year intake. Application for the research programmes is opened throughout the year with the exception of programmes with prerequisite courses.

In addition, applicants may also obtain the information on programs offered in the specific semester by referring to the IGS.

The University of Malaya expects all postgraduate candidates to be proficient in the English language.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT for international candidates writing thesis/dissertation in English:
i. IELTS (Academic) Band 6; or
ii. A score of 550 paper based total, a score of 213 for computer-based total or a score of 80 for internet-based total for TOEFL
However different entry requirements are imposed by:
Master of English Language Studies programme offered by the Faculty of Languages & Linguistics, the minimum English requirement is Band 7 for IELTS (Academic) or a score of 600 for TOEFL.
EXIT REQUIREMENT for international candidates following courses and or writing thesis/dissertation in other language EXCEPT English:
i. A band 5 for IELTS (Academic); or
ii. A score of 500 - 549 paper based total, a score of 213 for computer-based total or a score of 80 for internet-based total for TOEFL

The offer letter for Coursework and Mixed mode programme can be printed online after checking the status from the website while for Research mode, the offer letter will be sent by normal mail according to your correspondence address.
