The Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya is proud to announce the launch of its second Azmi Khalid Memorial Constitutional Law Essay Competition. This competition aims to encourage the exploration of constitutional law issues, promote critical thinking, and nurture a new generation of legal scholars in Malaysia.
The competition is open to all full-time students currently enrolled in public and private universities across Malaysia. It welcomes participants from all fields of study who have a keen interest in constitutional law and legal scholarship. Participants are invited to submit essays that engage with current issues, challenges, and developments in constitutional law, with a particular focus on its application in the Malaysian context.
“The Faculty of Law is grateful to our Alumni who graduated in 1982 for generously sponsoring this prize. A prize to commemorate the contributions made by the late Associate Professor Dr Azmi Khalid to public law in Malaysia,” said Professor Dr. Jason, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya.
“The competition is supported by the Universiti Malaya's Alumni, the Class of 1982 who share a passion for advancing legal scholarship and the rule of law. It provides a unique opportunity for students to demonstrate their intellectual abilities, with the potential to contribute significantly to Malaysia’s legal and constitutional discourse,” Professor Jason added.
According to the Chair of The Azmi Khalid Constitutional Law Essay Competition, Dr. Loganathan Krishnan, this competition will certainly stimulate young minds to reflect on the constitutional issues which are of fundamental importance for the citizens of Malaysia.
“In loving memory of the late Associate Professor Dr Azmi Khalid, a distinguished former member of the Faculty of Law at the Universiti Malaya, and a renowned constitutional scholar and human rights advocate, the Faculty of Law, with the generous support of its Alumni, the Class of 1982, established the Azmi Khalid Essay Competition in 2023.
“Associate Professor Dr Azmi Khalid’s unwavering commitment to justice and his profound impact on the fields of constitutional law and human rights continue to inspire and shape the legal community. This biennial competition honours his legacy and passion for justice, fostering scholarly engagement in these crucial areas of law. The theme for this year is “Maintaining the Rule of Law with Our Constitution in the 21st Century,” he added.
