Western Digital signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Universiti Malaya on 29 June 2022 to invest in the university to gain access to expertise and research opportunities through knowledge exchange over the next five years.

The event was held at Western Digital’s Kuala Lumpur Center of Excellence located in Petaling Jaya. Among the special guests who attended the signing ceremony were Prof. Dato’ Dr. Husaini B. Omar, Director General of Ministry of Higher Education; Dato’ Mohd Shahril bin Abdullah, Director of Community and Industry Collaboration Division in the Department of Higher Education; and Mr. Syed Kamal Muzaffa Syed Hassan Sagaff, Director of Advanced Technology and R&D Division from the Malaysian Investment and Development Authority (MIDA).

In line with Western Digital’s vision to create breakthrough innovation that is inspired by the convergence of human potential and digital transformation, this collaboration reinforces Academia-Industry partnerships that aim to promote, support, transform communities and catalyze change in the technology world that we are in today.

“We strongly believe that this strategic industry-university collaboration is a critical component of the innovation process, providing a myriad of benefits to both the university and Western Digital. For academics, we provide them with valuable industry-related expertise, enable their research to achieve tangible impacts and gain access to new skills, data or equipment. On top of enabling these university students to get valuable exposure to industry, we can also benefit from improved business performance through collaboration with the students in developing new techniques or technologies, gain access to new graduate talent and utilize the university’s cutting-edge resources,” said Mr. Raghu Bathamenadan, the VP and Managing Director of Western Digital Tech and Regional Center (M) Sdn Bhd.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Western Digital and Universiti Malaya was signed by Mr. Raghu Bathamenadan and Universiti Malaya’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International), Professor Dr. Yatimah binti Alias.

Professor Dr. Yatimah shared, “It is a privilege to have a global industry player like Western Digital to be one of our important partners. Western Digital has a long history in the electronics industry as a storage and data infrastructure company. And as Malaysia’s premier university, UM continues to lead on multiple fronts and capitalize on its many talents and strength to forge new collaborations, partnerships and engagements with local and global industries to ensure that e remain at the leading edge. I see a fantastic window of opportunity for UM to be involved and expand mutually beneficial collaborations in research projects that can create value to the society through innovative solutions”.
