“I was inspired to contribute to the medical education, especially the Anatomy subject, when I did my anatomy dissections during my undergraduate medical school days,” said Dr. Intan Suhana Zulkafli, Head of Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.

For those who are uninitiated, the study of the structures of the human body is referred to as human anatomy. An understanding of anatomy is essential for medical practice and other health-related professions. ‘Anatomy’ is derived from the Greek terms ‘ana’, which means ‘up’, and ‘tome’, which means ‘cutting’. Cutting up or dissecting organisms has traditionally been a part of anatomy studies.

Although imaging technology can show us a lot about how the inside of a body works, thus reducing the need for dissection, medical students still require to learn human anatomy from cadavers. This is why the Anatomy Resource Centre is important as part of their undergraduate learning.

Asked about the Anatomy Museum (also known as the Anatomy Resource Centre), Dr. Intan Suhana referred to it as 'a rare gem'. "It was established back in 1964 to facilitate the teaching and learning of Human Anatomy for medical and medical sciences students. All of the specimens were collected from generous donors and had been carefully maintained by the Department. The museum has undergone many upgrades over the years, with the last one in 2000. It is definitely a UM heritage," she explained animatedly.

“In the Anatomy Museum, CDs, books, anatomical models, histological and radiographic images are also available as reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The museum is meant to be used as a resource centre, akin to a library. Various classes, discussions and exams had been conducted here too,” said this University of Western Australia alumni.
