Universiti Malaya and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting savings through the National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) among students, as well as enhancing students' understanding and awareness of loan repayments, strengthening research and higher education development, and producing quality graduates.
The MoU signing ceremony took place at the Chancellery Building, Universiti Malaya. The MoU was signed by Universiti Malaya’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohd. Hamdi Abd. Shukor, and the CEO of PTPTN, Mr. Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid.
According to Mr. Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid, Simpan SSPN is a savings instrument established by PTPTN to facilitate financial planning for educational purposes. PTPTN's intention is to assist students in avoiding excessive debt while also having sound financial planning for their future education. Indirectly, through financial planning, graduates will rely less on loans alone and instead use savings to cover their educational expenses.
“Furthermore, PTPTN also intends to share information about the importance of repaying PTPTN loans and financial planning with students, particularly final year students, to help them allocate their funds wisely between loan repayment and living expenses.
“Through the signed MoU, PTPTN and Universiti Malaya agree to collaborate in various scopes, including enhancing the skills and knowledge of quality graduates to meet industry needs, cultivating the culture of saving through the Simpan SSPN scheme among all Universiti Malaya community members through various programs, research and development to enhance new ideas related to students' understanding of loan repayments and the importance of savings, networking cooperation programs with Universiti Malaya alumni, providing reward in the form of Simpan SSPN prime account to the recipients of Excellent Service Awards (APC) amongst Universiti Malaya staff, PTPTN information/promotion delivery through billboards on UM premises and establishing a network of cooperation to enhance the well-being of the people through corporate social responsibility between PTPTN and Universiti Malaya.
“It is hoped that through this collaboration and joint efforts, it will have an impact on the endeavours of PTPTN and UM in ensuring that students are more knowledgeable and informed about Simpan SSPN, while also opening up numerous opportunities and benefits for both parties,” he added.
Until February 28, 2023, PTPTN has assisted a total of 88,409 students pursuing studies in various fields at UM through education loans, providing them with opportunities for success.
