Ministry of Education strengthens cooperation to ensure graduates work according to qualifications

05 Oct 2026

The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) continues to strengthen collaboration with relevant ministries to ensure that university, polytechnic and community college graduates get jobs that are in line with their academic qualifications, thus addressing the issue of underemployment in the country. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the move was implemented through strategic collaboration, particularly between the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Human Resources, in line with the Malaysian Higher Education Plan 2026-2035. He said continuous efforts were important to ensure that thousands of graduates born each year could be matched with employment fields that were appropriate to their qualifications and current market needs. "Among the steps taken by the Ministry of Education is close collaboration between these key ministries to ensure that those who graduate from universities or polytechnics can be matched to employment fields according to their qualifications," he said.

He said this at a press conference in conjunction with the 2026 Academic Day and Month Celebration Ceremony at the University of Malaya (UM) here today. 0:00 / 0:00 BM EN Chinese Tamil Live TV Academic Day is celebrated on Oct 5 every year since it was announced by the government in 2019 as recognition and appreciation for the contributions of academics, scholars, researchers and intellectuals in the country's higher education ecosystem. Zambry, when commenting on the salaries of graduates, said the matter had been discussed in a Cabinet meeting and received the special attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in line with the salary adjustment measures that would be announced later. Meanwhile, he said the Ministry of Education continues to strive to facilitate the affairs of academics and remove any constraints that could hinder the development of research and knowledge transfer. According to Zambry, the main focus is to translate research and innovation results at the university so that they can be directly utilized by society and contribute to national development

Regarding the Ministry of Home Affairs' hopes for the upcoming national budget, he hopes there will be increased allocations, especially for development and management expenses. "We need to look at the aspects of student welfare, especially basic facilities, maintenance and repair of accommodation premises at universities, polytechnics and community colleges which require urgent attention," he said. -- BERNAMA
