Universiti Malaya (UM) today launched the Universiti Malaya 121st Anniversary Celebration (UM121) together with 2,000 campus community members, marking more than a century of the University’s journey in education, research and national development, while carrying UM’s aspiration to continue creating an impact on Malaysia and the global community.
The launch ceremony was officiated by His Royal Highness Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfur-Lah, Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, at Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor.
At the ceremony, Tuanku Chancellor also launched the official Universiti Malaya mascot and the official UM121 song as part of the celebration’s identity, which will accompany various UM121 programmes and activities. Both elements play an important role in strengthening the engagement of the community,alumni and the public with the University’s 121-year celebrations.
Also present were Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, the University’s Top Management, alumni,students and UM community members.
The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, Dato’ Seri Professor Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman, said that UM121 is not merely a commemoration of the University’s long journey, but a moment to reflect on UM’s role and its responsibilities for the future.
“121 years is a very meaningful journey for Universiti Malaya. However, this legacy is not only about what we have achieved. More important is how the strength of knowledge, research and talent at UM can continue to benefit the nation and society.
“UM must continue to be a university that leads with courage, develops solutions to real-world challenges and nurtures a generation capable of bringing Malaysia forward. This is the spirit we wish to carry through UM121,” he said.
Themed “121 Years of Excellence, Weaving the Future”, UM121 celebrates the contributions of previous generations who have shaped the University, while connecting current community members, alumni, strategic partners and future generations in continuing that legacy.
The UM121 celebration will continue through various programmes and activities throughout the year that highlight the University’s history and legacy, current achievements, research and innovation, alumni, as well as the contributions of the UM community to society.
