Biography

Dr. Lee Hwei Voon is a distinguished researcher in catalytic biomass valorisation, green chemistry, and sustainable materials, with a strong record of research excellence, innovation, and international recognition. She obtained her BSc (Hons) in Industrial Chemistry from Universiti Putra Malaysia, followed by a PhD in Catalysis, laying the foundation for her career in sustainable chemical technologies. Her research focuses on the development of heterogeneous catalysts, biomass conversion technology, green nanomaterials for renewable energy and environmental applications. She has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications (WoS indexed), with more than 6,000 citations and an h-index of 45. Dr. Lee has also successfully secured approximately RM2.5 million in research funding from university, national, international, and industry sources, focusing on green technology, CO₂ valorisation, nanocellulose technologies, renewable resources and sustainable application, and waste-to-energy systems, contributing to Malaysia’s sustainability and innovation agenda. She has supervised 37 postgraduate students (PhD and MSc), with 8 PhD and 15 MSc graduates successfully completing their studies, demonstrating a strong commitment to developing future researchers and strengthening Malaysia’s scientific workforce. Her work has resulted in multiple patented technologies and international innovation awards. Dr. Lee’s contributions extend beyond research. At Universiti Malaya, she has supported institutional excellence through roles such as Head of the Research Grant Unit at the Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research Centre, internal auditor, and member of taskforces for research funding and academic accreditation. Nationally, she has served as grant proposal evaluator, and member of national sustainability and biomass policy initiatives, while engaging with the public and industry through knowledge-sharing programmes. Internationally, Dr. Lee has contributed as Adjunct Professor at Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia, and as Expert Advisor for the Riset Kolaborasi Indonesia (RKI) Scheme. She has been invited as keynote speaker, session chair, and scientific committee member at conferences such as IUPAC and the Commonwealth Chemistry Congress, and has served as guest editor for high-impact journals, reflecting her active engagement with the global scientific community. Her achievements have been recognized through prestigious awards and honors, including

World’s Top 2% Scientists (Stanford/Elsevier, 2020–2025), the SERD Sustainability Award (2025), Excellence Service Award (2021), Asian Universities Alliance Scholars Award 2020 and multiple innovation awards. Dr. Lee continues to advance sustainable chemistry, fostering international collaboration, innovation, and human capital development, making significant contributions to the university, national research ecosystem, and society.
