Biography

Professor Ulung Datuk Dr. Harith Ahmad is a Distinguished Professor at the Photonics Research Centre, Universiti Malaya, and one of Malaysia's foremost pioneers in photonics, fibre optics and laser technology. In recognition of his exceptional scholarly achievements and international standing, he was conferred the Anugerah Profesor Ulung Negara 2014, becoming the sole recipient for that year and only the fourth Malaysian academic to receive the nation's highest academic distinction.


Professor Harith's academic journey began with a Diploma in Science from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), followed by a Bachelor of Science in Physics (First Class honours) from Universiti Malaya. He subsequently pursued both his Master of Science in Physics and Doctor  of Philosophy in Laser and Fibre Optic Technology at the University of Wales, United Kingdom, completing his doctoral studies in 1983. His academic training laid the foundation for a distinguished career that has shaped the development of photonics research in Malaysia for more than four decades.


Since joining Universiti Malaya in 1980, Professor Harith has been instrumental in establishing the University as a leading centre for photonics research. Widely recognised as a pioneer of photonics in Malaysia, he has dedicated his career to advancing research in optical amplifiers, planar lightwave circuits, fibre lasers, fibre optic sensors, optical communications and integrated photonics. Under his leadership, the Photonics Research Centre evolved into a world-class research laboratory and was recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HiCOE) in 2014, reflecting its international research standing and sustained scientific excellence.


Alongside his research achievements, Professor Harith has provided sustained academic leadership at Universiti Malaya. He has served multiple terms as Director and Executive Director of the Photonics Research Centre, in addition to holding appointments as Head of the Department of Physics and Acting Dean for the Advanced Engineering and Technology Research Cluster. Earlier in his career, he also served as Director at Telekom Malaysia from 1997 to 2000, where he strengthened the relationship between academic research and industrial innovation, particularly in optical communication technologies.


Professor Harith's research has consistently addressed emerging challenges in photonics and optical engineering. As Principal Investigator, he has led numerous nationally funded projects encompassing femtosecond laser and terahertz generation, graphene-based ultrafast photonic devices, advanced fibre optic sensing technologies based on Fibre Bragg Gratings, erbium-doped fibre lasers, optical amplifiers and integrated photonic systems. His work has significantly advanced Malaysia's capabilities in optical communications, sensing technologies and laser engineering while contributing to the broader development of photonics as a strategic field of science and technology.


An exceptionally prolific scholar, Professor Harith has built one of the most distinguished publication records in Malaysian science. According to his UMExpert profile, he has authored more than 1,300 journal publications, accumulated over 18,600 citations, achieved an H-index of 56, published five books and secured research grants exceeding RM43 million throughout his career. His work appears in many of the world's leading journals in optics and photonics, reflecting the international recognition and influence of his research.


Beyond scholarly publications, Professor Harith has translated scientific discoveries into technological innovation through an extensive portfolio of intellectual property. His inventions span fibre Bragg grating technologies, graphene oxide-based photonic devices, optical integrated microfibres, laser systems, optical amplifiers, biomedical laser applications, optical sensors and advanced optical communication technologies. 


Professor Harith has also made substantial contributions to developing Malaysia's next generation of scientists and engineers through postgraduate education and research supervision whose research spans fibre lasers, optical sensing, waveguide fabrication, integrated photonics and advanced optical materials. Professor Harith has successfully supervised 92 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduates and 70 Master's graduates, while currently supervising 15 PhD candidates and 9 Master's students. On the other hand, he has supervised 24 postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have gone on to establish successful careers in academia and research.


His academic leadership extends well beyond research. Professor Harith has served on the University Senate, promotion and appointment committees, research evaluation panels, and numerous strategic committees that shape research policy and academic excellence at Universiti Malaya. He has also contributed to the scholarly community as Chief Editor of the Journal of Sensors, served on the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Physics, and has been an active member of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia since 2003 and the Majlis Professor Negara since 2010.


Prof. Ulung Datuk Dr. Harith Ahmad has established a legacy that extends far beyond scientific discovery. His pioneering contributions have transformed the landscape of photonics research in Malaysia, strengthened university–industry collaboration, elevated the international reputation of the Photonics Research Centre at Universiti Malaya, and inspired generations of researchers to pursue excellence in science and innovation. Through his sustained commitment to research, leadership and talent development, he continues to shape the advancement of photonics and optical technologies while reinforcing Universiti Malaya's position as a leading research-intensive university on the global stage.
