Biography

Dr. Norazriena Binti Yusoff is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physics, Universiti Malaya, and a leading voice in the world of nanotechnology. Her journey is a true "homegrown" success story: she completed her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD all at Universiti Malaya. Today, she gives back to her alma mater not only as a researcher but also as the Assistant Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Material Science, where she has been instrumental in shaping the curriculum for the next generation of scientists. Dr. Norazriena has published more than 80 ISI-indexed articles, with an H-index of 30 and over 3,000 citations. Her publications appear in high-impact journals such as Biosensors & Bioelectronics, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Scientific Reports, Optics and Laser Technology, and IEEE Photonics Journal.

At the heart of her work is a fascination with the "small but mighty." Dr. Norazriena specializes in low-dimensional materials, including the wonder-material graphene, MXenes, and metal oxides. These materials are so thin they are almost invisible, yet they hold the power to transform our future. She applies them to two exciting frontiers:

Photonics: Using nanomaterials to create faster, more powerful, and tunable fiber lasers. Her work bridges the gap between fundamental material synthesis and the engineering of functional photonic devices, contributing to advancements in telecommunications and sensing technologies.

Smart Sensors: Developing highly sensitive tools to detect vital biological markers like glucose, dopamine, and L-cysteine, which could lead to better medical diagnostics. Her goal is to uncover how these low-dimensional structures can be engineered to drive the next generation of healthcare sensing technologies.

For four consecutive years (2022–2025), she has been ranked among the Top 2% of Scientists in the World by Stanford University for single-year impact and career-long contributions (2025), reflecting her significant impact on the international scientific community. Her lab is a hub of creativity, earning her titles like Best Young Inventor and multiple Gold at international exhibitions (i.e: V-Miiex 2021, SIVIIC 2021/2022, RISE). Her work is further bolstered by prestigious international funding, including the International Polyurethane Technology Foundation (Japan), the Nippon Sheet Glass Foundation for Materials Science and Engineering Grant (Japan), the UM-Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) Matching Grant, and the SATU Joint Research Scheme for collaboration with SRM Institute of Science and Technology, India, highlighting the global relevance of her work.

A global ambassador for Universiti Malaya, Dr. Norazriena has shared her expertise at renowned institutions worldwide. She has been invited as a guest lecturer and speaker at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya, and Universitas Riau in Indonesia, and has served as a trainer for an inbound program with Zhejiang University of Technology, China. Her international perspective is further enriched by her participation in the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program at Sivas Cumhuriyet University in Turkey and her current Inbound Faculty Exchange at Ajman University in the United Arab Emirates. Through these diverse roles, Dr. Norazriena embodies the excellence and global impact of Universiti Malaya’s research community, tirelessly working to shape the future of material science with a spirit of service and humility.
