Professor Chung Lip Yong is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. A distinguished academic and researcher in pharmaceutical sciences, he previously served as Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and was a founding member of the Department of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya. He earned his doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Wales College of Cardiff (Cardiff University) in 1990, where he also worked as a research associate and fellow on sponsored research projects, laying the foundation for his
later contributions to pharmaceutical research and innovation. Upon returning to Malaysia in 1995, Professor Chung played a crucial role in founding the Department of Pharmacy at Universiti Malaya. His contributions combined vision with institution-building, encompassing infrastructure development, academic and strategic planning, quality management, curriculum design, and teaching pharmaceutical chemistry and related subjects. As a result, the department grew into one of Malaysia’s leading centers for pharmacy education and trained approximately 1,200 pharmacists from 1995 to 2021. Professor Chung’s research profile is extensive, continuous, and internationally recognized. His work includes discovering bioactive compounds from natural sources, designing pharmacologically active molecules, and delivering targeted therapy through nanostructured and polymer-based systems. He has also made significant contributions to the study of free radicals, antioxidants, and pro-oxidants in type IV contact dermatitis, wound healing, wound dressings, and advanced nanotherapeutics, including photodynamic, photothermal, and sonodynamic applications. His scholarship has enhanced both scientific knowledge and practical use. He was among the early researchers to demonstrate the protective role of endogenous antioxidant induction in reducing the development of contact allergy and to study the bioactive and interactive properties of polymeric wound dressings. These contributions have received international visibility, including citations in OECD-related safety documents and research textbooks, reflecting influence beyond the academic sphere. Professor Chung has also made a major contribution to talent development. He has supervised more than 36 postgraduate students at the MSc and PhD levels, many of whom now hold senior roles in universities, industry, and government. This record reflects his long- standing commitment to scholarly mentorship, capacity building, and the development of future leaders in science and higher education. His publication and innovation record is equally impressive. He has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles, over 110 additional papers and industrial reports, and holds more than 15 patents. His international standing is further evidenced by recognition as one of the Top 2% of Scientists in the World in Medicinal and Biomolecular Chemistry, based on
both single-year and career-long citation impact. Beyond research and teaching, Professor Chung has contributed to academia and the profession. He has served on editorial boards, reviewed extensively for major international publishers, chaired scientific committees for national conferences, assessed research grants in several countries, and contributed to academic quality assurance through external examining, promotion review, and board memberships, underscoring his role in strengthening Malaysian higher education and the broader scientific and healthcare ecosystem.
