Professor Sazaly Abu Bakar is one of Malaysia’s foremost virologists, widely regarded as a leading authority during major infectious disease crises. As a Senior Professor at Universiti Malaya, he has been central to advancing virology and infectious diseases research in the country. He has built national research capacity, strengthened biosurveillance, and mentored scientists who now drive Malaysia’s public health and biomedical progress. His global influence is affirmed by his inclusion in the Stanford–Elsevier list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists, underscoring the lasting significance of his research work.
His scientific foundation was built through a Ph.D. and specialized virology training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, USA, an experience that catalyzed his lifelong focus on arboviruses, zoonotic pathogens, and the complex ecology of vector borne diseases.
His most transformative contribution since joining Universiti Malaya, is the establishment of the Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre (TIDREC) in 2008. Under his leadership as Founding Director for more than fifteen years, TIDREC evolved into Malaysia’s leading hub for tropical infectious disease research. Its elevation to a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) by the Ministry of Higher Education stands as a testament to his vision and sustained scientific leadership. He also directs the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus Reference & Research (MAA 12) and leads the Tick Cell Biobank Asia Outpost, the only such facility in Asia, positioning Malaysia and Universiti Malaya as a regional anchor for pathogen discovery, reference diagnostics, and international collaboration.
Professor Sazaly’s influence extends beyond research laboratories. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and has played a defining role in shaping national biosafety and biosecurity frameworks. As Editor and Chairperson, he led the drafting of Malaysia’s first Biosafety and Biosecurity Policy and Guidelines and is now steering the development of its second edition. His strategic contributions were equally pivotal in initiating and shaping the Malaysia National Vaccine Development Roadmap, strengthening the nation’s preparedness for future epidemics and pandemics.
His scholarly output reflects both breadth and depth with more than 360 peer reviewed publications and the successful supervision of more than seventy postgraduate students, many of whom now serve as researchers, academics, and public health leaders. As principal investigator for numerous national and international grants, he has consistently advanced Malaysia’s scientific footprint in emerging vector borne diseases and pathogen ecology.
Throughout his career, he has championed the principle that safe and responsible scientific research is inseparable from societal well being. His work is grounded in the belief that improving health outcomes, particularly in low resource settings, is a powerful driver of poverty eradication and national resilience.
