Biography

Sumiani Yusoff, Professor Dr, joined the Faculty of Engineering, UM in September 1990, specializing in Environmental Engineering and Management. She obtained her PhD in Environmental Engineering and Management from UM, MSc in Public Health and Environmental Control Engineering from University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom and Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). She currently serves as an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies, after leading the Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE), Institute of Ocean & Earth Sciences (IOES), as Director from 2018 to 2022. Committed and passionate about safeguarding the environment and realizing the importance of sustainable development, her previous sustainability leadership has successfully synergized campus sustainability agenda aligned with the University’s vision and mission with the launch of UM Eco-Campus Blueprint (UMECB in 2017), introduction of action translational research programme: UM Living Labs Grant Programme (UMLLGP), and subsequently charted a greener chapters for UM with the University’s achievement as the 4th Asia’s Most Sustainable University in City Centre Setup and Top 30 World’s Most Sustainable University in UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for three consecutive years since 2017. Previously, she assumed the role of Chairperson of UM Sustainability & Living Labs Secretariat (UMSLLS: 2018 – January 2021), and Deputy Director cum Chief Auditor of the Quality Management and Enhancement Centre (QMEC), UM. Prior to IOES, she has vast experience in helming the responsibility as the Dean of Sustainability Science Research Cluster (January 2016 – September 2018) and Deputy Director of the International Public Policy and Management (INPUMA), Universiti Malaya (June 2010 - December 2011). She has also been appointed as a Program Coordinator for Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UM (2005 to 2009) as part of her educational contribution in her area of expertise. A Civil Engineer by training, her research interests and area of specialization include environmental management systems, life cycle management and assessment, environmental impact assessment, environmental planning and management using Geographical Information System (GIS), integrated solid waste management, eco-design and sustainable production, eco-labelling, and environmental reporting. As a person who is committed to her work, these are several notable posts and contributions: Chairman and Vice Chairman of MANCID-YPF (Malaysian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage –Young Professional Forum), National Committee for ISCZ Malaysian National Standard for Environmental Management Standards Formulation, Group Head for Malaysia LCA National Project on Life Cycle Impact Assessment, National Expert Representative and Technical Member of Malaysian National Standards Committee on Environmental Management (SC 5) Life Cycle Assessment and Eco-labelling, National Technical Committee on Solid Waste Standards Formulation and Auditor for special projects in the National Prime Minister’s Sustainability Hibiscus Award, technical member of SIRIM-JETRO LCA implementation in Malaysia and member of International LUCED/U-NEXUS Environmental Management Perspective Research Network. She also serves as a technical reviewer for various credible local and international journals, among others, namely the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Energy, Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Environmental Impact Assessment Review, Journal of Environmental Management, Malaysian Journal of Civil Engineering, Jurnal Sains Malaysiana, Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Journal of Waste Management and African Journal of Environmental Science and Technology etc. She was also recognized as a Top 2% Scientist in the world for three consecutive years (2023-2025) by Stanford University through Elsevier Data Repository.
