UM–HCDC VOYAGE OF INTERCULTURAL BONDING & EXCHANGE (VIBE) 2026: WHERE CULTURES MEET, FUTURES BEGIN

From learning Malay to kayaking at Varsity Lake, exploring Kuala Lumpur, and sharing stories with Universiti Malaya (UM) students, 27 students from Holy Cross of Davao College experienced university life far beyond the traditional classroom.

What happens when 27 students from the Philippines arrive at Universiti Malaya for a week filled with new faces, new experiences, and a vibrant taste of Malaysian culture? They VIBE. From 18 to 24 October 2026, the Global Mobility Centre (GMC) at Universiti Malaya welcomed 27 students and two accompanying staff members from Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), Philippines, for the inaugural UM–HCDC Voyage of Intercultural Bonding & Exchange (VIBE) 2026.

More than a routine campus visit, VIBE offered students from both nations an opportunity to connect, learn, and immerse themselves in one another’s cultures through shared activities, dialogue, and collaborative exploration.

A Warm Malaysian Welcome

The HCDC delegation’s initial days at UM focused on getting acclimated to their new surroundings and building connections. The programme commenced with an ice-breaking session, followed by an extensive campus tour and an interactive Malay language workshop with a contemporary twist: “Learning Malay, but make it VIBE!” For many HCDC students, basic Malay phrases served as their first bridge between cultures, quickly sparking lively conversations, laughter, and lasting friendships with their UM student buddies.

Naturally, no Malaysian immersion would be complete without culinary and cultural discovery. Through the VIBE with Buddies session, participants exchanged stories regarding their national traditions, student lifestyles, and daily routines, discovering that while Malaysia and the Philippines differ in many respects, they share profound commonalities.

From the Classroom to the Campus Ecosystem

VIBE also granted HCDC students a firsthand glimpse into Universiti Malaya’s dynamic academic and intellectual environment. The delegation attended the prestigious Nobel Laureate Lecture Series at Dewan Tunku Canselor, experiencing the University’s world-class scholarly culture.

Learning, however, extended well beyond the lecture theatre. At Rimba Ilmu, students explored UM’s rich tropical biodiversity, whilst kayaking across Varsity Lake fostered teamwork, outdoor recreation, and lighthearted camaraderie. The delegation also took part in an environmental sustainability initiative organised in partnership with the Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) at Varsity Lake. Participants learned about the lake’s ecological significance, joined local UM students in conservation activities, and contributed directly to a campus clean-up, reinforcing a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

Seeing Kuala Lumpur Through Fresh Eyes

Venturing beyond the campus grounds, the delegation embarked on a City Heritage Tour across Kuala Lumpur, experiencing the capital’s distinctive synthesis of historical heritage, cultural diversity, and modern urban vitality. Rather than conventional sightseeing, the excursion encouraged students to appreciate the multifaceted histories, communities, and traditions that define Malaysia’s premier metropolis.

Connecting People Across Borders

Perhaps the most memorable dimension of VIBE was neither a single destination nor a specific scheduled activity; it was the people. Through the HELCA & Mobility Fair, faculty-based academic sessions, and informal gatherings, the HCDC delegation engaged directly with local undergraduates, gaining diverse perspectives on university life. Meaningful bonds developed naturally over shared meals, collaborative tasks, and countless photographs. For international mobility initiatives, these authentic human connections prove the most enduring.

An Enduring Partnership

As the programme drew to a close, the HCDC delegation and the UM community convened for a heartfelt closing ceremony to celebrate a week of shared learning, cultural discovery, and goodwill. VIBE 2026 underscored that internationalisation transcends geographical borders—it cultivates spaces where future leaders learn from one another, broaden their worldviews, and establish networks that endure well into the future.

Under the theme “Different countries. Different cultures. One shared experience,” the Global Mobility Centre looks forward to expanding its partnership with Holy Cross of Davao College and creating further reciprocal mobility opportunities for students across the region.
