Ernie Adnan, PhD candidate from the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics (FLL) emerged victorious, edging closely the first runner-up, Choy Ker Woon from the Faculty of Medicine, to become the champion of the University of Malaya Three-minute Thesis Competition (UM3MT) 2018 held at Auditorium IPPP, UM on 11 April 2018.
Presenting her thesis titled "How Do We Produce and Perceive Word Stress in Malaysian English?" she impressed the judges and audiences with her clear and concise delivery.
Meanwhile, Choy Ker Woon with her thesis titled "A Paeonol a Day Keeps the Heart Healthy all the Way" was noted for her storytelling approach and charming presentation.
The competition also made history when for the first time in seven years, three contestants made the honorable mentions, something that the panel of judges felt as deserving due to the quality of their deliveries. The contestants were Andrew Ng Kay Lup, representing the Faculty of Engineering, Khairul Azhar Jamaludin, from the Faculty of Education, and Tan Thean Heng, competing for the Institute of Graduate Studies.
The judging panel consisted of the head judge, Datuk Dr. Amru Nasrulhaq Boyce, Prof. Dr. Nik Ahmad Hisham Ismail from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and alumnus Mr. Charles Mohan.
The competition was officiated by the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), Prof. Dr. Kamila Ghazali. Also in attendance were the Dean of Institute of Graduate Studies, Prof. Dr. Wan Haliza Abd Majid and other representatives from various faculties.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a research communication competition designed for postgraduate students to present their research summary concisely within three minutes to a non-specialist audience. Within three minutes, participants are required to describe and explain their research aims, findings and significance to the audience. This competition is open to all active UM PhD candidates who are currently in the 4th semester and above.
